A growing discussion on the need for greater scrutiny into the activities of digital platforms has posed questions on how both ex-ante regulation and new market investigation tools with quasi-regulatory powers can address this issue of growing digital dominance. The role of economists in grounding this discussion in applied economic theory is emphasised in this article to allow for testable predictions against available data.
